The modifications represent the company's latest phase in an eight-year effort to both increase supply and decrease sulfur content of motor gasoline and diesel. It's anticipated the modifications and expansions will be completed by 2010.
ExxonMobil's Baytown Refinery at 2800 Decker Dr. is the largest in the US, with an output of approximately 567,000 barrels a day. The complex consists of a refinery, as well as two chemical plants and two research centers. The plant also produces polypropylene and butyl polymers.
The company's Baton Rouge Chemical plant on Scenic Highway is right behind the Baytown facility in terms of production. In addition to its crude capacity of approximately 503,000 barrels a day, the plant also produces chemicals, alcohols, acids and oxygenated fluids. The Antwerp Refinery is ExxonMobil's second largest in Europe.
According to a statement by ExxonMobil Refining & Supply president Sherman Glass, the modifications and additions will produce cleaner-burning fuels while increasing production. "Our increase in diesel production at these three sites will be equal to the diesel produced from about four average-size refineries," Glass commented in the statement. Calls to ExxonMobil seeking comments were not returned by deadline.
