As part of its cost-cutting measures, Target will also shutter its only Arkansas distribution center, located in Maumelle, near Little Rock. That move will impact 500 local employees and will take place later this year.

"We are clearly operating in an unprecedented economic environment that requires us to make some extremely difficult decisions to ensure Target remains competitive over the long-term," said Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel in the release. The company did not return calls seeking comment by deadline.

The press release said headquarters employees will receive full pay and benefits through April 1, after which they'll receive a comprehensive package based on years of service. Little Rock distribution center employees will be offered positions at other Target distribution centers, or will receive comparable severance, the release noted.
