"Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts has searched for the perfect venue and partner in Japan for a long time," said Madhu Rao, managing director and CEO of Shangri-La, at the opening. "The Japanese market is an essential market for us as we expand internationally. Today, I am delighted to say we now have a hotel in Tokyo, one of Asia's and the world's key capitals, and that we will be able to offer our guests in Japan traditional Shangri-La hospitality."

The 202-key Shangri-La Hotel Tokyo is housed in the top 11 floors of the Marunouchi Trust Tower Main, it contains two restaurants the Piacere, an Italian restaurant, and Nadaman, a Japanese restaurant. The Marunouchi tower is a 37-floor, mixed-use project near the Tokyo Station.

The hotel also houses meeting rooms and banquet facilities, a health club, the CHI spa, which is a staple in all the Shangri-La properties, and indoor swimming pool. It was designed by Santa Monica, CA-based Hirsh Bedner Associates.

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts owns 62 hotels and resorts in many major cities throughout Asia and the Middle East, with additional properties under development throughout Europe and North America. The Hong Kong-based company opened its first resort in 1971 in Singapore.
