Other building specs for the 1.2-million-square-foot project, which is being funded in part with $162 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, include accessibility standards mandated under the Architecture Barriers Act and at minimum a LEED-Silver design plan. Groundbreaking is scheduled for this month, with completion in 2013.
The project is not necessarily a complete win-win for the District though. Currently the Coast Guard occupies 592,000 square feet at 2100 2nd St.--a building owned by Monday Properties. The agency renewed its lease there at the end of last year for a 10-year term. Monday Properties did not return a call to GlobeSt.com in time for publication.
