For Rio the Olympic games are more than just the construction of new stadiums. In addition to the $14-billion plan to add subway lines, create a new bus system and significantly increase the number of available hotel rooms, now the country must also work to clean a number of polluted bays and lakes. As important as any of this, will be for Brazil to get a handle on the drug trade and, in so doing, the related violence.
The city will be divided into four main Olympic zones; Barra, Copacabana, Deodoro and Maracana. The Barra zone will be the main stage for the majority of the sporting events. It will also house the media center for the days of competition.
According to reports, Rio officials plan to create nine new permanent buildings and seven temporary buildings. The country will also need to repair eight already existing properties and plans to utilize 10 buildings that are working and not in need of repair.
To house the tourists Rio plans to utilize six large modern cruise ships with more than 8,500 cabins. The country will also build a number of new apartment units, although the exact number has not been released. To meet the Olympic committee criterion, Rio has agreed to set aside 49,750 rooms for tourists. The country's government officials say some 1,700 of the rooms will be located in apartments-turned-hotels for the event and at least 13,000 hotel rooms.
As news of the vote was made public, Brazilian stocks jumped significantly across many sectors. Real estate companies saw a significant incline. According to reports Cyrela rose 4.72% and Gafisa stocks rose 4.71%.
