The new center will be developed and operated on Freedom Drive by Exel, a logistics company that currently operates United Supermarkets' 500,000-square-foot distribution center at Llano Logistics In Lubbock. Upon opening, the new center will employ 75 workers, all of whom will be Exel employees.
A spokesman with the Lubbock, TX-based United Supermarkets tells GlobeSt.com that a second distribution center was necessary to support the company's growth strategy. The company operates six stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, as well as stores in Wichita Falls and Abilene. The new distribution center will service 16 of the company's 50 existing stores. Robert Taylor, vice president of logistics for United Supermarkets said 100% of the company's frozen food, 90% of its produce and 75% of its dry grocery will originate from the center.
The spokesperson explains that the search for the second facility centered on the Dallas-Fort Worth area because of plans for growth in the region. "This not only allows us to continue our growth strategy in the D-FW area, it also frees up some of the volume in our existing Lubbock distribution center, allowing us to expand out her as well," he adds. After the new facility opens, he continues, United Supermarkets will revisit its growth plan.
Dan Cook with Cushman & Wakefield of Texas Inc. represented United Supermarkets in the land transaction. Tony Crème, vice president of Alliance Global Logistics Hub/Alliance Gateway developer Hillwood provided in-house representation for the seller.
