One of these is StonebridgeCarras' Constitution Square, in theDistrict, which just announced it received Gold ND certification forPhase 1 of its mixed-use development. In addition to the LEED ND certification, Constitution Square is seeking LEED certification for each of its two first-phase office buildings: One Constitution Square is registered with the certification goal ofLEED Platinum, and Two Constitution Square is seeking LEED Gold.

A collaboration among USGBC, Congress for the New Urbanism and theNatural Resources Defense Council, LEED for ND integrates smartgrowth, urbanism and green building for neighborhood design. OtherGold ND certified projects in the DC area include JBG Cos.' TwinbrookStation in Rockville, MD and Founders Square in Arlington, VA.

The seeds of Constitution Square's ND certification were an attempt bythe NoMA BID--the neighborhood in which Constitution Square islocated--to receive ND certification for several buildings at once.NoMa has several green bona fides, NoMA BID director Liz Price tellsGlobeSt.com, and having several buildings certified through ND wouldhave burnished its credentials. "Unfortunately, the way the initialcertification process was set, it made it too cumbersome and expensiveto take that approach." Constitution Square had been eager since thebeginning to apply for the certification so it wentforward, she adds.

Price would be interested in trying again if the process has beentweaked under the public registration system, she says. "But we wouldnever do it as a BID--what we would do is bring together all of theinterested parties in a joint effort. That would be ideal."
