SUZHOU, CHINA-Suzhou Wuzhong Gouyu Asset Management Co. has chosen Chicago-based DeStefano Partners to create its planned North Road Development. The city is on the lower reaches on the Yangtze River and is on the shores of Lake Taihu.
The four-block site is bordered by canals to the east and north, and major traffic roads to the west and south. The project will have lower retail pavilions, with high-rise office, residential and hotel elements above, according to a DeStefano statement. The company did not return a request for comment.
The Chicago design firm said it will strive to achieve four basic goals with the development: serenity, connectivity, vitality and humanity. “Our goal was to capture the essence of Suzhou and reinterpret it in a fresh way that would be appropriate for the growing, contemporary Chinese city,” said Masha Safina, senior designer, in the statement.
Suzhou is one of the largest industrial cities in China. The government joined Singapore in a joint venture to create the Suzhou Industrial Park. It’s not clear when this new project will get built, or how much it will cost.
