Nordstrom Rack To Relocate to More Space

SEATTLE-Locally based Nordstrom Inc. plans to relocate its downtown Seattle Nordstrom Rack from the Broadacres building at 1601 Second Ave. at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Pine Street to Westlake Center. The relocated Nordstrom Rack is scheduled to open in spring 2012.

Geevy Thomas, president of Nordstrom Rack points out that the new location—entrance at the corners of Fifth and Pine Streets—will be larger and will “offer our newest Rack design features and make it easier for customers to shop both stores. Though we have a fondness for our old home on Second Avenue, we hope to better serve customers in the new store.”

Although the old store was only 500 square feet less than the new location, a source close to Nordstrom Rack tells GlobeSt.com that the way the company builds stores today allows for less “back of the house” space, so “the new store will have 30% more selling space.” The relocated Rack will also have an entrance off the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel corridor at Westlake Station. No further lease details were able to be disclosed at this time.

Adam Metz, chief executive officer of New York City-based General Growth Properties, points out that Nordstrom Rack “is a great addition to the merchandise line-up at Westlake Center.”

The store will be below street grade in a single level space. The company says in a prepared statement that “locating the store in the heart of the retail core across the street from the downtown Seattle Nordstrom store will serve as an added convenience for customers who like to shop both locations.”
