BOSTON-Although his revised plans for a pair of mixed-use towers along the waterfront still exceed a height limit of 200 feet imposed last month, developer Donald J. Chiofaro says he's hoping the new scheme for redeveloping the Harbor Garage will serve as a starting point for a "constructive dialogue'' with the city, the Boston Globe reported Tuesday.
The larger tower would top out at 615 feet, down from 780 feet in an earlier version, while the smaller one would reach 470 feet. The city zoned the height restriction in August to prevent buildings on the property from overshadowing the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway. Chiofaro plans to use the towers for office and residential space.
"This is the most important site on the Greenway,'' Chiofaro told the Globe. "It's a place where the city and the financial district can make a statement not only about themselves, but about the future of the city. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity.''
However, the Boston Redevelopment Authority said it expects Chiofaro and his partner, Prudential Real Estate, to follow procedure. "The BRA will conduct the appropriate review if, and when, Prudential Real Estate files a notice of project change for the Harbor Garage,'' an authority spokeswoman told the Globe. "We will not use scarce resources to respond to the latest PR scheme for this site.''
