Walmart is giving New York City another try.
The retailer is not giving up in its efforts to enter New York's city limits and is trying to get into all five of the boroughs. The company is scheduled to make its third effort in front city council next month after two previous attempts were thwarted.
At issue seems to be the argument that Walmart doesn't pay enough and sucks the life from mom and pop stores. There are also allegations that the chain is anti union.
But apparently there is a demand for the retailer. A spokesman told Reuters that residents inside New York City spent $165 million in stores surrounding the area.
We think it's interesting that Walmart seems like the last big-box chain not to enter the city. Best Buy is all over the place, Target dots the city and Costco even has a store in Manhattan now.
Other than its size, is Walmart really that different than these other chains and shouldn't it be allowed to enter the city as well? Or is there just something inherently bad about the chain that should keep it out of New York?
