ARLINGTON, TX-Super Bowl XLV will bring roughly $202 million in related spending to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, according to a report from PwC US. That amount represents a record since the firm began publishing the report 13 years ago, according to Robert Canton, director of PwC’s sports and tourism sector and author of the report.
The $202 million includes spending by the National Football League, businesses, visitors, and media on area lodging, transportation, food and beverage, entertainment, business services, and other hospitality and tourism activities. The previous record was $195 million associated with the 2007 Super Bowl in South Florida.
Canton tells GlobeSt.com that the record spending can be attributed to several factors including the overall economy, venue, location and competing teams. “A big part of it is the size of Cowboys Stadium, and the fact that it can accommodate 100,000 fans,” he points out. “Additionally, the teams playing in the Super Bowl this year have strong fan bases that travel well. Dallas-Fort Worth is geographically convenient, which will attract more people.”
Moreover, companies are spending again on Super Bowl parties and other activities. For the past three years, Super Bowl-related bashes hosted by consumer goods companies and media outlets were seriously scaled back, Canton notes.
Even the fact that the Texas economy is in better shape than the rest of the nation contributes to the overall Super Bowl spending. “It makes sense to think that companies in Dallas-Fort Worth and throughout Texas might not be as hesitant to spend money on Super Bowl-related activities for employees and clients,” Canton contends.
