SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA-R.D. Olson Development of Irvine is scheduled to kick off construction of a 130-room, $22 million Residence Inn by Marriott today, a project that will be fifth hotel that the company has developed in Orange County. The groundbreaking is slated for the development site at 33711 Camino Capistrano. Marriott International, will manage the hotel, while R.D. Olson Development will retain ownership through its related entity, Camino Capistrano SPE.

In addition to its 130 rooms, the 91,500-square-foot, three-story hotel will feature 1,500 square-feet of meeting space, a 1,000 square-foot fitness center and elements that will make it "the newest generation of the Residence Inn brand," according to an announcement by the developer. Upgrades include enhanced space layout in the living areas accomplished by furnishing the rooms with new sectional couches and building a television stand and desk combination; replacing the typical carpet/tile pattern in the baths with tile-only flooring; and building a unit designed and equipped specifically for e-devices.

The expected completion date for the hotel is in the first quarter of 2012. Awbrey Cook Mcgill Architects, based in San Diego, provided the architectural design, while Kling/Barta Design LLC of Shawnee Mission, KS designed its interior.

Olson notes that other amenities and design features will be oriented toward business and pleasure travelers alike. A putting green, fire pit and resort-style pool will sit on the edge of the bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Guests also will enjoy the hotel’s close proximity to Dana Point Harbor, a mega soccer complex, local shopping, and a leading tourist attraction—the San Juan Capistrano Mission.
