McLEAN, VA-Paetec Communications is taking 62,000-square feet at 1764A Old Meadow Rd. here to house its data center operations and some administrative functions. It inked the 12-year deal with TDC Owner LLC. Transwestern agents Ken Marks, Bernie McKeever, Sr. and Bernie McKeever, Jr. represented TDC. Michael Rareshide of Partners National Real Estate Group repped the tenant.

Paetec Communications is taking the entire building for its use. About 50,000 square feet in the three-story building will be used for its data center operations. The additional 10,000 square feet will be devoted to support and administrative offices. The property delivered in 1992 as a build-to-suit for Visa, which used the building for its credit card services operations until early 2010.

The lease represents new net absorption for the Northern Virginia market, McKeever said in a prepared statement. Previously, Paetec had only maintained sales offices in the region. It also illustrates the scarcity of data center space that is available in the area, at least in traditional venues.

The two major operators here --Digital and DuPont Fabros Technology--are moving to expand their capacity, Bryan Loewen with Dallas-based GVA Cawley's Mission Critical Connect told GlobeSt.com in an earlier interview. For the most part, such space must be had via retail providers or companies, such as Microsoft, which are building their own data center space.
