SOUTHAMPTON, NY-More than 1,000 people, including key figures in commercial real estate, took part in “Kites for a Cure,” a family kite-fly benefit held on Coopers Beach here over Memorial Day weekend. The annual fundraiser for Uniting Against Lung Cancer raised $50,000 for cancer research across the US.

“This is one of the highlights of the year and it’s become a beacon of hope for people who have been touched by lung cancer,” says Southampton Mayor Mark Epley in a release. Epley, who lost his father to lung cancer six years ago, served as Honorary Commodore of the May 28 event.

Adds Linda Wenger, UALC’s executive director, “Kites for a Cure gives people a chance to do something hopeful in the face of the monumental challenge of lung cancer, and to bring their voices together as families raising awareness about the disease and the desperate need for research funding.”

UALC was founded in 2001 in memory of Joan Scarangello, a Southampton resident and non-smoker who lost her battle with lung cancer. With Mary Ann Tighe, tri-state CEO at CB Richard Ellis, serving as its president, the foundation has awarded more than $7 million in research grants to find a cure for the disease that will claim an estimated 160,000 lives in the US this year, more than colon, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers combined.
