PLAINFIELD, IN-An apparent sales tax dispute has Amazon recently announcing it will build another distribution center here, a 900,000-square-foot facility. The Seattle-based firm already leases 947,000 square feet in AirTech Park here, and at two other sites in Whitestown and Indianapolis.

The Internet fulfillment company has space at 715 AirTech Pkwy., at the 500-acre park operated by a joint venture of ProLogis and Browning Investments Inc. The lease was signed in 2008. The new announcement would bring the company’s total footprint in Indiana to more than three million square feet when this project is finished this summer. The properties in Indiana are operated by Amazon.com.indc LLC.

The firm has not released where it plans to locate here. Reports say the only available property that large is the 925,000-square-foot former John Deere distribution center on Perry Road.

Dave Clark, VP of Amazon North American Operations, said in a statement that the company is expanding in Indiana because “Gov. Mitch Daniels and other state officials have demonstrated their commitment to Amazon jobs and investment.”

Clark’s comment is reported to be in reference to Indiana giving Amazon a pass on paying state sales taxes. While Amazon is also building distribution centers in Washington, South Carolina and Tennessee, it is reportedly shutting down facilities in Texas and California after those states threatened to charge the firm with back-payment of sales taxes.
