WHEELING, IL-Even insect infestations can benefit some companies, and Protect-A-Bed, a company that sells anti-bed bug kits, is expanding to fill a 220,000-square-foot headquarters here at 1500 S. Wolf Rd. The company was in about 35,000 square feet in Northbrook, IL, though its new location, in a 1978-era building owned by CenterPoint Properties, only has 20,000 square feet of office.
While they can be found everywhere, the resurging, massively multiplying bed bug is having a nasty impact on the hotel industry. In New York City, the number one infestation spot, it’s expected that up to $40 million will be spent this year on eradication efforts.
Protect-A-Bed started in South Africa in 1980, and moved into the United States 11 years ago. The company sells packaged kits that cover and protect bedding against insects, allergies and stains. “Every mattress needs protection” is the company’s motto.
The firm had moved into its Northbrook site only three years ago, and is already moving on. James Bell, CEO, said the firm is on track to grow 35% over its 2010 sales. The company does not release sales figures. “Our new facility will help perpetuate our continual growth pattern and poise us for accelerated growth,” Bell said in a statement. The company also maintains a sales office in Philadelphia, as well as product showrooms in Las Vegas, Chicago and New York City.
