WASHINGTON, DC-John Slidell, principal and founding partner of The Bozzuto Group, has been named Chair of the Urban Land Institute’s Washington District Council. Slidell’s term runs through July 1, 2013. In addition, Alia D. Anderson is joining the organization as its new director of community outreach.
The two are coming on board as ULI Washington prepares for a greater focus on regional issues. This is not to say the ULI Washington’s core strengths will be de-emphasized, Anderson tells GlobeSt.com. “For example, there are two programs that are very popular with members—the urban planning program and urban assistance—which will be given a lot of support and attention. However, the District Council has also recently completed a strategic plan that also looks at new strategic directions.”
This includes, she says, taking a more regional approach to land use issue and real estate issues. Members will see signs of this new emphasis in a variety of ways, Anderson says. “Members will be taking on a number of projects in this area. Also, we will be working the regional counsels of local governments.” It will be critical to have a market-based perspective in these planning conversations, she adds, “so they are not just theoretical planning exercises but grounded in reality.”
Anderson replaces Jason Stuart, who has relocated to Fort Worth, TX. Anderson joins ULI Washington from Reconnecting America in Oakland, CA, where she worked as a policy associate. With over 1,800 members, Washington, DC is one of ULI’s largest and most active District Councils.
