WASHINGTON-Sales of new homes plunged in March indicating that the housing market remained under strain in spite of some improvements in home buying. The Commerce Department stated that new-home sales fell 7.1% in March to an annual rate of 328,000.

February's figures showed a 7.3% gain on new-home sales. The Commerce Department also reported that the median sales price was $234,500 last month, below 1% from the February price.
