ARLINGTON, VA-Interstate Hotels & Resorts has promoted Samuel E. (Ted) Knighton, the REIT’s chief operating officer, to president and COO. Knighton has overseen global operations of the company's approximately 400 managed and owned commercial real estate assets on three continents—including its recent expansion in many markets. His tenure with Interstate stretches back to 1990; he has assumed increasingly important positions at the REIT through the years, becoming COO in December 2011.
During that time period, Interstate has made a number of strategic advancements in foreign markets. In June, it opened an 80-room Holiday Inn Express Amsterdam-South--the third of a nine-hotel portfolio currently being developed across the Netherlands.
In May the REIT entered into a management agreement for the Marker, a luxury hotel and apartment complex under development in Dublin. The 187-room hotel is expected to open in early 2013. In April, Interstate expanded its signed and managed hotels in India to 13, taking over management of the Turtle on the Beach and Estuary Island Resort, both owned by Thomas Hotels and Resorts.
Prior to becoming COO, Knighton’s focus was in North America as president of hotel operations for Interstate's North American portfolio. Knighton has also had senior positions with Radisson Hotels and Hyatt Hotels Corp. Interstate was unable to return a call to GlobeSt.com in time for publication.
