SAN FRANCISCO-Those who follow @GlobeStcom on Twitter and @GlobeStLIVE may have seen a post teasing the announcement a few days ago, but GlobeSt.com has learned that the Swig Co.’s 22-story Mills Building at 220 Montgomery St. has received LEED Gold certification. The Mills Building is believed to be the oldest property in San Francisco to receive LEED Gold certification, according to a prepared statement.
Sacramento-based Leading Edge Consulting Services advised the Swig Co. on the LEED certification process. Totaling 626,000 square feet in a 10-story building and adjacent 22-story tower, the tower was completed in 1932.
The 10-story building fronting Montgomery Street was built in 1892 and is the only surviving example of the Chicago School of Architecture in San Francisco, according to a prepared statement. It was also one of the few buildings downtown to survive the 1906 earthquake.
The property is also one of the longest continuously-owned assets in the city and has been in the portfolio of the Swig Co. for more than 50 years, according to the release. “The Mills Building has tremendous historical significance in the city of San Francisco but it is also very much a timeless asset with state of the art modern communications systems and amenities that few buildings in this market enjoy,” explains Jeanne Myerson, CEO of the firm. “Now it can also claim to be one of the most sustainable buildings in a city which prides itself on being at the forefront of the Green Revolution.”
Since 2007, the Mills Building has also received an Energy Star rating, which places it among the highest rated in the city for energy efficiency, says the statement.
As part of its program seeking LEED Gold certification, the engineering and property management team introduced measures to reduce energy and water consumption, adopted new green cleaning policies and pursued a comprehensive indoor air quality program.
