DETROIT-In what is almost becoming a “Flag of the Week” story, Avison Young has planted another one on US turf. This time is here, it’s 18th location outside of Canada.
And in a developing pattern for its new offices, AY has recruited away a name from a competitor. James Becker, most recently international director and president of Jones Lang LaSalle’s Canadian practice, has been named principal and managing director.
In addition to overseeing the Detroit operations, Becker will also be charged with opening what the firm refers to as greenfield (read new territory) offices in Minneapolis and Ohio. “Opening an office in Detroit is an important part of our strategy to establish a strong presence in key markets throughout the US,” comments chairman and CEO Mark E. Rose, explaining that it’s “a market with a significant amount of corporate activity, and we already have a number of clients and prospects” there.
Over the past three and a half years, AY has grown from 11 to 38 offices in 32 markets and from 300 to more than 1,000 real estate professionals across Canada and the US. Most recently, the firm added the New Jersey-based Walsh Co. to beef up its property management practice and added three outposts in Florida with the help of professionals hired over from Flagler.
