TRENTON-After being the focus of some harsh criticism, Republican leaders in Congress have promised to begin voting on Hurricane Sandy relief funding starting today, The Record reports.
The House of Representatives is expected to vote on $9.7-billion in flood insurance aid on Friday (Jan. 4) which will be followed later in the month with another measure that could bring as much as $60 billion in federal assistance to states affected by Sandy, including New Jersey.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and others were highly critical of House Speaker John Boehner, who was elected for a second term as House Speaker on Thursday, for pulling the vote on Sandy relief earlier in the week after the House had completed deliberations on averting the fiscal cliff.
“Disaster relief was something that you didn't play games with. But now in this current atmosphere everything is the subject of one-upmanships, everything is a possibility, a potential piece of bait for the political game,” Gov. Christie said. “It is why the American people hate Congress, it's why they hate it. Governor Cuomo and I are as frustrated as two people can be.” See story in The Record.
