SAN DIEGO-Turner Construction Co. has reached a milestone on the construction of Fowler Park at the University of San Diego. The project is now 50% complete, with the topping out scheduled for later this month, and completion expected in February 2013.
The “new Fowler Park” will enhance an aging facility for the USD Toreros, according to a prepared statement. USD selected Turner Construction to manage the project due to its commitment to green building.
The new Fowler Park at USD will be home to Cunningham Field, built in the 1960s. The new $11-million facility includes seating for 1,700, a state-of-the-art clubhouse for the players, two suites with high end finishes and indoor/outdoor seating, a press box, public restrooms, concessions, stadium lighting as well as new sod and synthetic turf.
Constructed with local and recycled materials, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and a sustainable site design, the project is designed to achieve LEED Silver Certification through the USGBC.
In addition to implementing green building practices into the construction project, Turner Construction also set up its jobsite office in the EcoPort Trailer. The trailer, formerly stationed at the San Diego International Airport for the Green Build project, features nontoxic and formaldehyde-free plywood, low E double insulated glass, DC powered lights in lieu of AC (uses 45% less energy than fluorescents), solar and wind-generated power, flooring made from soybean byproducts, and a composting toilet.
The construction company has achieved a 94% recycle rate at the USD Fowler Park project.
