ELMONT, NY-Two sections of the Belmont Park racetrack complex here could become the site of a professional soccer stadium amid a mixed-use entertainment development, under a proposal submitted to the Cuomo administration, the New York Cosmos said Wednesday. The plan was delivered to the Empire State Development Corp. this past Friday, according to a release from the soccer franchise, which says the project will be privately funded.

“We plan to develop an iconic project for the region and build a state-of-the-art stadium that will make Nassau County and the entire region proud,” Seamus O'Brien, Chairman and CEO of the New York Cosmos, says in a release. “Belmont is an ideal location and a win-win for everyone involved. Nassau County and Elmont will realize much needed economic growth, and local residents will have a year-round premier destination they can call their own.”

Along with the 25,000-seat stadium, Elmont Town Crossing would include a “Restaurant Row” of nine new eateries, nearly 250,000 square feet of retail space, a 175-key hotel and the development of a 4.3-acre public park for the residential community. It's expected to cost more than $400 million, the release states.

ESDC is currently reviewing the proposal. If it's approved, shovels will begin moving dirt in 2014. The stadium is expected to be completed by the end of 2015, followed by installation of the field and the stadium opening projected for spring 2016. Retail establishments are expected to open in the autumn of 2015, the release states.
