ORLANDO-The hotel industry is big business here—nearly a $3-billion business.

According to data compiled by Smith Travel Research, hotel revenue in the Orlando area grew 5.6% in 2012, as compared to 2011. Occupancy levels reached 68.8% at year's-end 2012, up 1.8 percentage points from 12 months earlier.

Average daily rooms rates inched up 2.9% from $94,11 to $96.88, according to a report in the Orlando Business Journal.

Revenue per available room grew from $63.62 in 2011 to $66.68 at the close of last year. The number of hotel rooms sold in Orlando rose from 29 million in 2011 to 29.7 million last year. See story in the Orlando Business Journal.
