MIAMI-The Miami Dolphins are now looking to hold a referendum in Miami-Dade County on the question of whether the public should pay for about half of the planned $400-million renovation of Sun Life Stadium.

The football team believes the stadium upgrade is critical to bringing the 50th Super Bowl to Miami in 2016. The NFL owners are to select a location for the game on May 22 and the team wants Miami-Dade County to hold a special election before the NFL owners' vote, according to the Miami Herald.

The cost of a special election could run as high as $5 million, according to county officials. Team officials did not say over the weekend whether team owner Stephen Ross would extend an offer to pay for the election. However, the clock is ticking on the NFL's selection of the 2016 Super Bowl venue.

Rodney Barreto, chair of South Florida Super Bowl Committee, says, “It's the golden anniversary game. It's an opportunity that only comes along once in a lifetime.'' See story in the Miami Herald.
