PHILADELPHIA-Several City Council members have introduced bills that would change or moderate the impacts of Mayor Michael Nutter's new property tax system.
Councilman Mark Squilla has proposed phasing in changes in residential property tax bills over four years to offset huge tax increases on homeowners in his district, according to The Inquirer.
Squilla has raised concerns that the results of a recent citywide reassessment are full of inaccuracies. In the First District, which he represents, he charges that property owners are facing drastic tax increases. Councilwoman Maria Quiñones Sánchez has submitted a bill that would give businesses a $2,000 exemption on the Use and Occupancy tax, which is calculated in part on a property's assessed value.
