GETTYSBURG-The controversial Cyclorama building on the storied Gettysburg battlefield was torn down this past weekend.
The 50-year-old battlefield landmark was reviled by some Civil War enthusiasts and revered by others who were fans of the design by noted architect Richard Neutra. The building was constructed to house the massive Cyclorama painting that depicts the Battle of Gettysburg's most important moment—“Pickett's Charge” on July 3, 1863. The painting has been relocated to the visitor's center on the battlefield property.
Katie Lawhon, a spokeswoman for the Gettysburg National Military Park, said that by the early summer when events begin for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War battle, grass will be growing on the Cyclorama's site. See story in the Gettysburg Times.
