BALTIMORE-The developer hired by Amtrak to bring transit-oriented development around Baltimore's Penn Station envisions a 1.5-million-square-foot project that would include housing and commercial office space.
Baltimore-based Beatty Development unveiled its preliminary master plan estimated at $500 million that would span the divide between Mount Vernon and Charles North created by Interstate 83 and the rail lines and be an anchor for the Station North arts and entertainment district, according to the Baltimore Sun.
According to the plan, housing would be located on a parking lot north of the station, while two office buildings would be built across Charles Street from the station and across St. Paul Street.
“Station North is an amazing area. It just needs investment. Investment around the train station, a transit link, will spill into North Avenue and the whole neighborhood. It is transformational for Baltimore,” says Michael L. Ricketts, vice president of development for Beatty Development,
With the Beatty plan in hand, Amtrak, which owns most of the property, will now develop a strategic plan for the station that will also examine the station's short- and long-range needs for high speed, intercity and commuter rail. See story in the Baltimore Sun.
