PHILADELPHIA-A court settlement reached between the developer and the Preservation Alliance, concerning the demolition of two landmarked church buildings in West Philadelphia, will allow construction to commence on a planned 280-unit apartment tower.
The Preservation Alliance dropped its legal opposition to the demolition of the two brownstones after Radnor Property Group agreed to create a fund to preserve the main church—the Episcopal Cathedral, according to the Inquirer.
The settlement, which was announced yesterday, allows Radnor to proceed with the construction of the project at 38th and Chestnut streets. The project will replace the rectory, parish house and a small apartment building at the site.
Terms of the settlement, according to Preservation Alliance Chairman Marian A. Kornilowicz, calls for Radnor Property to donate more than $2 million for restoration of the cathedral. The firm also agreed to contribute $1.3 million more during the next several years to a maintenance fund. See story in The Inquirer.
