WILMINGTON, DE-Pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca says it plans to cut or shift 1,200 workers from its facilities here, although it will keep its North American corporate headquarters operations in Wilmington.

The British drug maker reported on Monday that about 650 U.S. jobs would be eliminated with most being from Wilmington. The job cuts will occur between now and the end of 2015.

Approximately 300 jobs will be shifted to Maryland where AstraZeneca inherited a newer research facility when it acquired MedImmune for $15.6 billion in 2007. About 170 jobs will move to other company facilities, including 80 to a research unit in Waltham, MA, according to the Inquirer.

When the job consolidation program is completed, AstraZeneca's North American headquarters in Wilmington will have approximately 2,000 employees, down substantially from its all-time high of more than 5,000. See story in The Inquirer.
