PARSIPPANY, NJ-The mayor of Parsippany James Barbiero and other city officials are bristling at a letter sent to the township by an attorney representing a developer that is seeking to build a mixed-use project on Route 46 that would include a Whole Foods supermarket.

The town council on Tuesday voted unanimously to postpone a vote on whether to grant developer RD Realty the ability to build a mixed-use development on the parcel. The project calls for a Whole Foods supermarket, another retailer and 72 upscale townhomes.

Several Parsippany officials say they felt threatened by a letter sent to the township from an attorney for the developer RD Reality that stated if the overlay zoning allowing mixed use was not granted, it would seek to create up to 530 rental apartments, designating 20 percent of them as affordable housing at the site.

Councilman Mike dePierro called the letter a threat before proposing that the council hold off voting on the zone designation. Mayor Barbiero said in response to the RD Realty letter after the vote was taken, "You can't threaten us. Let's put it that way.” See story in the Star Ledger.
