CHICAGO-Outgoing U.S. Transportation Secretary Raymond LaHood says a few final details need to be completed before the $100-million loan earmarked for the extension of the Riverwalk is finalized.
Sec. LaHood visited Chicago on Thursday and appeared with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to discuss the status of the six-block project that will run along the south bank from State Street to West Lake Street. LaHood says the paperwork needs to be completed to finalize the loan. The loan must be repaid with interest over a 35-year term that would begin when construction is completed. The mayor says the project could break ground next year and be completed by the end of 2016, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The extension project will feature a learning center focused on the river's ecology, a “zero-depth fountain,” kayak rentals and a wood-planked section with floating gardens. See story in the Chicago Tribune.
