MIAMI-While the construction industry in Miami-Dade County is showing signs of resurgence, an albatross to the local economy has been the local government sector that has lost nearly 11,000 positions since June 2010.

In fact, since its peak employment level reached in early 2008, local government employment in the region is down 14% or approximately 17,000 jobs, according to federal labor statistics.

Approximately 101,000 people now work in local government, down from a peak of nearly 120,000 at its peak, according to the Miami Herald.

Helping to fuel the economic recovery in the region has been hospitality and retail, which have accounted for about 50% of the jobs created since June 2010. See story in the Miami Herald.
