CINCINNATI- Steiner + Associates and Bucksbaum Retail Properties just announced that they will break ground this fall on Liberty Center, a 64-acre, 1.1-million-square-feet mixed-use project north of Cincinnati. The partners say they hope the center will eventually grow into a larger regional development hub.

When they complete this first phase in the spring of 2015 the center, positioned at the junction of the newly-constructed Liberty Way Interchange at I-75 and SR 129, will have 600,000-square-feet of retail space including at least one 200,000-square-foot department store and 370,000-square-feet of specialty retail and restaurants. The center will also include 100,000-square-feet of class A office space, a 135-key hotel, 220 luxury multifamily units and a 60,000-square-foot second-level upscale theater with a dining component.

But Steiner and Bucksbaum, based in Columbus and Chicago, respectively, will also include elements not seen in a lot of shopping centers. Much of the retail space will look out on parkland and a series of restaurant pavilions. Tree-lined walkways will also bisect the site, providing natural gathering spaces. They will locate the easternmost park within the 180,000-square-foot enclosed portion of the project.  Two larger outdoor parks include “The Green,” a family-oriented space complete with pop fountains and other interactive features. “The Square” will anchor the west end and feature sculptures, a grand fountain and a lawn that slopes toward an outdoor bandshell.
