NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ-Work has begun on what Mayor Michael J. Giordano Jr. calls the largest project this community has seen in nearly 50 years.

Demolition work began this week at the former Kmart store on Route 22 between West End and Rock avenues here. Once demolition is completed, construction will begin on the first phase of a multi-phased redevelopment project. At the former Kmart site, a new 156,000 Costco store will be built. Also part of the first phase of the venture will involve tearing down not only the vacant Kmart, but the adjoining Pathmark, Chase Bank and auto repair shop at the property, according to the Star Ledger. The existing IHOP and Subway restaurants at the property will remain open.

"The area has been dreary for the past five to six years," Mayor Giordano says. "This is going to make it attractive to other businesses.” See story in the Star Ledger.
