KEARNY, NJ-US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Shaun Donovan, chair of the Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force, visited the state yesterday and announced new standards for rebuilding property destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.

The new measures for rebuilding property destroyed by Sandy now require businesses, homeowners and transportation agencies, such as NJ Transit, to raise structures one foot higher than what current flood maps now require, according to The Record.

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Donovan says homeowners must adhere to the standard if they incur damage valued at more than 50% of their home's market value and are rebuilding with federal funds.

“Right here, at Substation 41, major flooding caused this station to lose power, impacting Amtrak and New Jersey Transit,” Sec. LaHood said. “Today's announcement will help prevent the kind of infrastructure delays” that Hurricane Sandy wrought on NJ Transit and Amtrak commuters. See story in The Record.
