NEWARK, NJ-United Airlines reports that it will spend $150 million to upgrade its facilities at Newark Liberty International Airport here as part of its lease extension.
United officials say the Chicago-based air carrier will "further develop its concourse areas" at Terminal C and also "improve baggage handling," according to The Record. The airline also states it intends to build a $65-million catering facility as construction continues on its maintenance hangar.
Gov. Chris Christie released a statement on the United Airlines investment, which states, "This long-term commitment that United is showing to Newark will help us create jobs and continue our economic comeback.”
Also in a prepared statement, Jeff Smisek, United's chairman and CEO, states, “As the largest airline in New Jersey and New York, and one of Newark's largest employers, United is committed to Newark Liberty as a model of customer service, convenience and efficiency." See story in The Record.
