WASHINGTON-Skanska USA Commercial Development Inc. has informed the District that it intends to decontaminate the properties at 44 and 88 M St. NE before it begins construction on its new office and retail project there.

Through a separate application with the District, a Skanska affiliate is voluntarily cleaning up 22 M St. NE where the developer plans a 285-unit apartment building with approximately 5,000 square feet of retail. The ground beneath the site was found to contain chlorinated solvents, according to the Washington Business Journal.

Skanska will remediate volatile chlorinated organic solvents and petroleum discovered at the 88M site where it eventually will build a 315,000-square-foot office and retail building. A similar building is planned for the 44 M property. See story in the Washington Business Journal.
