NEW YORK CITY-Verizon is planning to shift approximately 1,100 workers from downtown Manhattan to Brooklyn by the end of this summer due to continued fears of floods in lower Manhattan.

Crain's New York Business reports the company in a letter to employees in late February stated, “Our 140 West St. building is in a flood zone. Our goal is to give you a state-of-the-art facility and avoid having to, again, send you to a temporary work location if and when severe flooding occurs.”

The company was forced to move employees out of its offices at 140 West St. to other locations after Hurricanes Irene and Sandy caused flooding in its 32-story tower.

While company officials say the firm has invested heavily in lower Manhattan and is not abandoning the area, one local politician thinks otherwise.

"Verizon is trying to break its word to the lower Manhattan community, working families and New York's taxpayers," says Julie Menin, a candidate for Manhattan Borough President. See story in Crain's New York Business.
