PHILADELPHIA-SugarHouse HSP Gaming has agreed to pay $650,000 in fines in connection with charges that SugarHouse casino management violated the Clean Water Act and the Rivers and Harbors Act during work performed at the property in 2009 and 2010.
Federal prosecutors in Philadelphia announced the settlement deal on Monday. Prosecutors charged that during the two-year period SugarHouse management “conducted work and discharged dredged and/or fill material” into the Delaware River without a permit from the Army Corps of Engineers, according to the Philadelphia Business Journal.
Prosecutors further stated that unauthorized work was performed on several occasions at areas immediately surrounding the casino that included along Piers 42 and 43, despite management having received several cease and desist letters from the US Army Corps of Engineers.
“This case reinforces our commitment to protecting the environment by ensuring that corporations either follow environmental laws or face serious sanctions,” said Zane Memeger, U.S. Attorney for the eastern district of Pennsylvania. See story in the Philadelphia Business Journal.
