NEW YORK CITY-Workers hoisted the final two sections of the crowning mast to the roof of the One World Trade Center office tower here on Thursday.
The final piece, weighing in at 22 tons, is part of a 408-foot steel spire and radio tower that will crown One World Trade Center and bring the office building to its maximum height of 1,776 feet.
Hundreds of construction workers and reporters watched as a crane lifted the structure from the ground to the roof, a process that took several minutes, according to the Wall Street Journal. The spire will be hoisted into place as the centerpiece of the nearly $4-billion tower at a later date.
Weather postponed the spire hoisting event from Monday to Thursday, which coincidentally was the second anniversary of the death of Osama bin Laden. One World Trade Center is approximately 55% leased, anchored by Condé Nast as well as the Chinese firm Beijing Vantone Real Estate and the U.S. government. See story in the Wall Street Journal.
