WASHINGTON, DC-Vornado Realty Trust reports that Whole Foods Market Inc. has signed a lease for a new location at the REIT's $250-million Metropolitan 45 building here.

The 37,000-square-foot store will sit at the base of Vornado's high-rise, 700-unit housing project to be built at 12th and S. Eads streets. The deal was announced by Mitchell Schear, president of Vornado/Charles E. Smith during an earnings call Tuesday. He terms the deal with Whole Foods and the firm's residential project as “game changers” for Pentagon City and Crystal City.

Whole Foods confirmed the lease deal for the Crystal City store, which will be its eighth in Northern Virginia and second in Arlington County, according to the Washington Business Journal. It is projected to open in 2017.

"Signing the lease with Whole Foods is a home run by any measure for the project and the neighborhood," Schear says. "Whole Foods has a history of increasing value to its surrounding neighbors, which we fully expect will happen here where we own two big parcels of adjacent land that will surround Whole Foods."
