PHILADELPHIA-The board of directors of the Philadelphia Convention Center voted on Wednesday to privatize management functions and to hire SMG of West Conshohocken, PA to oversee the management of the facility that has fallen on hard times.

SMG was hired by the board in a 13-2 vote over Comcast Spectator's Global Spectrum unit, according to the Inquirer.

"I am thrilled that the board today has embraced a bold and bright future for the Convention Center, born of a new management model that sets the stage for future improvements," says Board Chairman Gregory J. Fox. "It's a willingness to depart from the past and embrace the future."

The contract with SMG will range from $325,000 to $475,000 per year, depending on what management duties SMG takes on. See story in the Inquirer.
