AUSTIN-As if Texas wasn't receiving enough kudos for its economic strength, Area Development Magazine has come along and added another award to the state's growing collection. In this case, Area Development Magazine has honored the Lone Star State with its 2013 Gold Shovel Award, citing a strong economic recovery, along with a falling unemployment rate (6.4% at least count), a GDP of 3.2% and an diverse business sector that's attracting businesses and commercial real estate development.

The write-up in the magazine notes that Texas had replaced all of its recession-hit jobs by December 2011. Though many of the jobs are energy related, other sectors have played a part, including chemicals and information technology.

The article goes on to say that Austin is the site of one of the newer construction projects – Apple's new IT operations sector (anticipated to bring 3,600 jobs into the state) and an 800-job Visa IT center. Meanwhile, headquarters expansions at Ericsson (Plano, TX) and Southwest Airlines (Dallas) are anticipated to create 2,600 more jobs.
