MIAMI-South Florida business and political leaders joined executives with Miami Herald Media Co. on Wednesday to officially open its new Doral headquarters complex.

The new, two-story, 160,000-square-foot headquarters is home to both the Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald newspapers. A 19,000-square-foot printing plant was built on six acres of land adjacent to the new headquarters. The total spaced occupied roughly equals about one-third the size of the Herald's former bayside headquarters, according to the Miami Herald, which is a subsidiary of the McClatchy Co.

“Miami remains an important market for McClatchy,” said Kevin S. McClatchy, chairman of the Sacramento-based McClatchy Co. “We have faith in its potential for growth and the many opportunities it offers.”

The move was precipitated by Malaysia-based Genting Group's $236-million purchase of the Miami Herald's former 14-acre property two years ago. Genting has plans to build a resort with a hotel, condominiums, and commercial and retail space at the site. See story in the Miami Herald.
