NEW YORK CITY-A plan by the New York City Economic Development Corp. to redevelop vacant parcels in the Charleston neighborhood of Staten Island is within reach.

Construction is expected to begin next year on a plan to bring a mix of commercial and residential uses on vacant land in Charleston. The first phase of the project would consist of a retail center, a public library and a public park; the second, which the city expects to be built by 2020, would add more retail to the site, as well as senior housing and a K-8 public school, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Two developers are in negotiations with the city to purchase 11 acres for the retail portion for $7.5 million. The public-approval process is expected to be finished within six months. See story in the Wall Street Journal.
