NEW YORK CITY-The health care institutions behind a proposed $240-million proton beam cancer therapy center are close to finalizing a deal for space in Harlem.

The New York Proton Center, which consists of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Beth Israel Medical Center, NYU Langone Medical Center, Montefiore Medical Center and Mount Sinai Hospital, is now in talks about a city-owned site between East 126th and East 127th streets, according to Crain's New York Business.

Norton Travis, executive vice president and general counsel of Radiation Therapy Services, which operates and manages radiation treatment centers primarily under the name 21st Century Oncology, believes the consortium is about 30 days away from signing a contract, the newspaper reports.

Construction of the facility would take three years to complete. The initiative is being developed and managed by 21st Century Oncology, which has an equity stake in the venture. See story in Crain's New York Business.
