NEW YORK CITY-A controversial proposal to demolish the popular graffiti mural 5Pointz in Long Island City and replace it with two high-rise apartment towers won the approval of Queens Borough President Helen Marshall on Wednesday.

G&M Realty can now bring its special permit proposal to build two tower buildings that could contain approximately 1,000 apartments to the city Planning Commission and later to the City Council, according to the Commercial Observer.

Supporters of the 5Pointz urban graffiti mural, which was first opened in 1993, have been arguing against its destruction. G&M has offered to have 75 units of affordable housing and 12,000 square feet of space for art studios at the development. See story in the Commercial Observer.
